Tetracycline Phototxicity As Studied with the Candida albican Test

Abstract
1. Objective:
@EN Our intent was to evaluate whether DNA damage affects tetracycline phototoxicity.
@ES 2. Methods and Materials:
@EN Filter paper disces containing one of the prepared test drug solutions at a different concentration were placed on a Sabouraud glucose agar plate on which suspension of Candida albicans had been evenly spread. 25 J/cm* of ultraviolet A(UVA)
was
administered to each plate. After 48 hours culture, the Candida-free zone around each disc was checked.
@ES Results :
@EN All tested tetracyclines showed Candida growth inhibition, namely phototoxic effect, when the drug concentration was sufficient. The Candida growth inhibition was also observed in non-irradiated plate containing doxycycline, minocycline or
tetracycline at high concentration.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN DNA damage by high concentrated tetracycline affects tetracycline phototoxicity.
